Why do we need IPv6

• Running out of IPv4 address space

• Future address space intensive applications

• Smart dust
• Automotive subsystems

• For the forseeable future we will be running both IPv6 and IPv4

• Transition is a myth – there are still DECnet boxes out there
• People with IPv4 are happy enough and see no reason to change
• Some devices will never be IPv6 capable
