After fitting a Ubiquiti TouchSwitch POE - replacing the supplied power supply - the outdoor unit became reliable - I am not quit sure what caused the problem but it does not appear to be related to cabling or connections. It is unclear why the Toughswitch solves the problem, however, since its installation over a month ago the intermittent failures of the Outdoor unit have stopped - hopefully I will have a quiet working summer.
