Zoneminder ( a recording and security program was surprisingly easy to set up. Video4Linux the drivers for video capture cards for Linux, on the other hand, was a nightmare.
It took lots of experimentation but our generic video capture card based on the Philips SAA7134 (DVR9008-1V1) finally worked. It required the following settings in /etc/modprobe.d/saa7134.conf to get it to work:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 saa7134
options saa7134 gbuffers=16 card=60,60,60,60,60,60,60,60 tuner=4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4

In the ZoneMinder configuration we needed to select device channel 3 (equivalent to Composite Input 2) and our local configuration

After that the ZoneMinder setup was just as documented.
