How could it be so … we have snakes, spiders, sharks, crocodiles and even mean kangaroos … how could this country be almost as safe as the Netherlands?
Apparently it is a result of the methodology. They surveyed "American Travellers" and asked their opinions and then added data from more rigorous sources.

To compile the list of most traveller-safe nations, Berkshire Hathaway went straight to the horse’s mouth and asked 1800 American travellers to rank the countries they visited based on safety. The firm then combined their answers with data from the Global Peace Index, Numbeo, and other sources spanning various factors, including terrorism, weather emergencies, health concerns and the safety of underrepresented groups,

Clearly we need to fix this poor impression and promote our dangerous wildlife and our vast and inhospitable outback.

But seriously while Australia does have a bush origin myth, it is really a highly urbanised, advanced country with a stable government. Vanilla, tame and safe.

Unfortunately without more details it is impossible to work out the weighting of opinion and the data, however, in this case they probably agree. The casualty is some self pride in the Australian myth of our rugged unforgiving country and the daring individuals who must inhabit it. But we will need a better slogan than "Visit Australia, the 2nd safest place after the Netherlands".
